On Sunday a message was preached on love. Loving our neighbors, loving others. It got me to thinking about love. CUE in music for the song by foreigner
I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older
Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
And through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder
I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me
Aaaah woah-oh-ooh
Let's talk about love
(I wanna know what love is) the love that you feel inside
This song basically says what I am thinking.
I question if I know what love is! I WANT to know what LOVE IS!
Are there different kinds of love?? I think there are. I know the bible says there are. Do we go through different stages of love with each other?
When you fall in love with your spouse there are those romantic feelings and those wonderful butterfly feelings, but those eventually fade. Does that mean you don't; love them? Do you love them more? different? when you marry another partner, do you love them more? Less? more or less...(lol) or different?
With your children, when they are little you have that mother bear protective love! as they grow it changes. When they are teens you know you love them but you get tired and frustrated. When they are adults you love them and admire them , not as your children but as the wonderful adults they have become. The people they have become.
I know that we say we are suppose to love unconditionally! Do we?
Can you fall out of love? or does your love just change from one type of love to another type? If you fall out of love , were you really ever in love? or was it just a romantic love? inftuation? puppy love?
In the message on Sunday it was also stated that its easy to SHOW love to strangers! I think thats true. We can buy gifts anonymously at Christmas and sponsor children in third world countries and show them love like that. That is easy. But what about the people in our homes in our inner circle? The daughter who is doing drugs, the husband who is insensitive to our needs ? Do we love them? do we show love to them?
Is showing love and FEELING love different?
Love is a BIG word. It means many different things to many different people. if you could describe what love is , how would you describe it?
The bible describes it like this
1 Cor 13:4-8 Love is patient, Love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs, love doesn't delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves. Love never fails"
Does this seem impossible to you? Sometimes it does to me. I am not patient, I am not always kind, I can be easily angered. Does that mean I dont' love?
CUE in song
I want to know what love is! I want you to show me
I have always thought that this description of love was the ideal. That a life of love is seeking to get there. Like the Budda and enlightenment. I think those of us who open our hearts to other people's children expect a lot of ourselves, always seeking to do better. And that, in and of itself, is an act of love.
ReplyDeleteTYLA I am moved to tears as I read and then respond. must be hormones! You are right though, I think I expect more of myself and am always striving to do better. I don't like struggling with this and YET if I quit struggling and trying to improve I should quit fostering, ministry and parenting
ReplyDeleteCongrats on starting your blog. I think it will be fantastic as you generally have a lot to say. Or, should I rephrase that in that you have a lot to offer!
ReplyDeleteGreat questions!
